ZENONIA 1 Hunger, Weight and Day/Night Explained
Why these systems still exist
The dev team said in their August 2026 interview that hunger, weight, the good/evil meter and the day/night cycle were kept on purpose because they “make players prepare food and resources before setting out” and “think carefully about which equipment to carry”. They were removed from ZENONIA 3 onward, so if you come from the later games they will be new.
Hunger
- Regret gets hungry in real time. The gauge sits on the HUD (the Steam version redesigned it after Next Fest feedback).
- When it empties, your maximum SP shrinks and the SP bar flashes. You do not lose HP.
- Food restores a fixed amount: Apple 10, Sushi Roll 20, up to Elixir 150. Prices scale almost linearly, so the cheapest food per point is whichever you can carry. The full table is on the items page.
- Heaven’s Peach (Item Gal) stops hunger for 72 in-game hours; sleeping at an inn refills the gauge.
- SPI raises maximum hunger by 1 per point.
- Steam reviewers complain the gauge empties “in minutes”; it is the most-cited balance issue in early reviews, so budget a few hundred gold of food per dungeon.
Weight
- Every item has a weight; the limit is set by STR (+14 per point) and can be raised permanently by the Feather of Oblivion (+20% each, up to +100%, five uses).
- Going over the limit makes Regret very slow, which is deadly against anything with a wind-up. There is no hard cap on pickups, so the game lets you overload yourself.
- Sell Normal-tier gear you will not wear; buy fewer potions if you are an AGI Assassin; and buy the Feather early on any class that is not a Warrior.
- Pushing stones ignores the overweight penalty, an original quirk that survived.
Durability
Weapons and armor lose durability with use. Repair at the blacksmith (the Steam version added a repair-all button) or with a Repair Hammer in the field. The Hammer of Ladon permanently raises an item’s durability by 20% steps.
Day and night
- The clock runs continuously and shows on the HUD next to a sun or moon icon.
- Nothing forces you to sleep, but the Dark Merchant only appears inside inns during specific night hours, different for each town. The schedule is on the Dark Merchant page.
- A Magic Candle lights dungeons and reveals the minimap for 72 hours; it is a purchase, not a clock effect.
